As Santa Fe's Poet Laureate program ambassador, I As Santa Fe's Poet Laureate program ambassador, I feel called to offer support, healing, and community through what I know: poetry. What's going on in the world, across the globe, has caused heartbreak, confusion, anger, division. I'm offering a free hybrid poetry reading/workshop on Thursday, 5pm, at Santa Fe's main library, to gather community, present a few poems from times of war and peace, and enable participants to privately write and reflect in real time. This is not a political rally. This is not meant to publicly vocalize outrage. My intention is clear: provide a space for poetry to help individuals reflect in their own ways, and grapple with grief, confusion, hope, and healing for themselves, by way of the poems presented. Given the anticipated group size, sharing work won't be part of this particular program. I will however offer gentle quidance, questions to ponder, and all reading and writing materials will be provided. If you have questions, reach out at 505-230-0683.

I've been working hard at bringing new ideas, new I've been working hard at bringing new ideas, new ways of integrating poetry into every day life as the Santa Fe Poet Laureate program ambassador. Conversations take months with new people, new places, and new ideas to come to fruition. I'd approached Market Street Grocers back in August about having poetry at their registers and this small creative vision came to life this past week! I wrote these poems just for shoppers, designed the postcards, and now, a little touch of beauty is alive at check stands throughout the holidays to hopefully brighten someone's day...
Thank you to Miriam Sagan for the wonderful invita Thank you to Miriam Sagan for the wonderful invitation to place my poetry in the public space of Santa Fe Community College. The poems are from my latest collection “such is.“ There are 10 posts around campus, and it makes a beautiful addition to allow poetry to be accessible and integrated into every day life which, as most know, is very important to me. It's exciting to not know how or when your words will connect -- with one stranger or many, the feeling of possibility is the same. I want to thank poet Bill Waters for the honor of following on the pages of your lovely poems. It brought me joy to collect your poems and then to come home and spend time with them and to read them. I felt like I had found a treasure. Here are the places where my poetry pieces will be up on exhibit for a while. There is a campus map available of where the posts live and can be seen. #poetryoffthepedestal
Today was a special day. I had the honor and oppor Today was a special day. I had the honor and opportunity to teach high schoolers poetry at New Mexico school for the Deaf. I don’t know how to describe exactly how powerful it was. To see my poetry being read, and then interpreted through sign language, was a surreal and profound experience. To watch how the interpreters physically conveyed my words, and the emotion of my words. To contemplate how these kids hear their own words in their heads, and what that "sounds" like, is fascinating. I also was struck by how initially reserved so many of them were, but after our two hours together, they were so open and bright. The interpreter told me that she hasn’t experienced these kids going from being so “shut in“ to being so open and expressive before, and that openness was a result of on how I made a real connection with them. She said that deaf children tend to silence themselves--they can initially be reserved or self conscious. She also said it made her happy to see them so excited to speak up and share their deep truths and expressions. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to working with these kids again soon. ❤️🦋
